6. Exploring Greece from the comfort of home
During the pandemic, we also supported the Ministry of Tourism with the Greece From Home initiative, which aimed to help Greeks and people from all over the world stay connected with Greek culture. The initiative also allowed people to discover and be inspired by the beauty of Greece from the comfort of their homes.
7. Launch of ‘Be Internet Awesome’
In 2020, our educational program “Be Internet Awesome” started in Greece. The program’s goal is to teach people about internet safety. With support from Google.org, the program has trained 15,000 teachers and more than 230,000 students, either live or online.
8. Piloting of Android Earthquake Alerts in Greece
In 2021, we piloted Android Earthquake Alerts in Greece, a year after its launch in the U.S. and New Zealand. This initiative is crucial for a country like Greece, which is regularly hit by earthquakes. Every second counts in a natural disaster or emergency, and Google continues to support Greece in crisis response.
9. Introduction of Google Cloud region in Greece
In 2022, we announced our plan to open the first Google Cloud region in Greece, aiming to accelerate the country’s digital transformation. Research commissioned by Google indicates that by 2030, the region will contribute a cumulative USD 2.2 billion to Greek GDP and support the creation of more than 19,400 jobs by that year.
10. Launch of ‘Athens: The city is the museum’
That year, we celebrated the beautiful capital of Greece with “Athens: The city is the museum.” This joint initiative with the Ministry of Tourism and the Municipality of Athens aimed to promote Athens as a tourist destination. Visitors can experience Athens in a new way through curated audio walks using Google Maps with sound.
11. Google’s support for sustainable development in Greece
In 2022, during the seventh Delphi Economic Forum, the Greek Ministry of Tourism and Google announced the launch of a joint educational program to accelerate the sustainable development of small and medium-sized tourism enterprises in Greece, in collaboration with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
12. Introduction of Flood Hub in Greece
In 2023, we expanded our flood forecasting capabilities to Greece through the platform Flood Hub. This platform now includes areas in Greece with the highest percentages of population exposed to flood risk and those that experience more extreme weather. Governments, aid organizations, and individuals can use Flood Hub to take timely action and prepare for riverine floods, with locally relevant flood data and forecasts up to seven days in advance.
13. Bard speaks Greek
In July 2023, Bard, our collaborative AI tool, began speaking and understanding Greek, enabling local users to collaborate and create in their native language.
14. Launch of Immersive view
This year, falling in love with some of the greatest Greek landmarks got easier with immersive view in Google Maps. Users can explore landmarks like the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Theatre of Dionysus, Hadrian’s Gate, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus in a more natural and intuitive way.
