The Warhammer universe boasts a vast amount of lore for fans to explore. Despite the extensive existing content, Creative Assembly seeks to expand the universe further with the latest Total War game by collaborating with Games Workshop.
Trusted Reviews had the opportunity to sit down with Ian Roxburgh, Game Director, and Andy Hall, Principal Writer, to gain insight into the untapped lore that Total War: Warhammer 3 will explore.
When asked about new players entering the Warhammer universe, Hall revealed that a significant portion of the intriguing story elements in Warhammer 3 will introduce never-before-seen details.
“A lot of the cool new stuff is actually brand new lore that we’re introducing with this game,” Hall said.
He also mentioned that Kislev, one of the hero factions, has been completely reworked and reevaluated by Games Workshop for this game, effectively becoming like a brand new intellectual property. Furthermore, Cathay, an Eastern-inspired faction, will be introduced in Warhammer 3.

What’s interesting is that Cathay, a race briefly mentioned in Warhammer lore back in the mid-80s, will be developed further for the game. Hall expressed his enthusiasm about bringing Cathay to life, which has only been talked about and hinted at in the source material, stating that the interaction with Games Workshop allowed them to expand this faction’s lore for the game.
“I mean, realizing Cathay – a race that’s only ever been talked about and barely hinted at in the source material – and seeing that come to life was what was very engaging,” Hall added.
Total War: Warhammer 3 is scheduled to be released on 17 February 2022, giving fans the chance to explore the new factions for themselves. For more details about Total Warhammer 3, read our hands-on review and stay tuned to Trusted Reviews for additional interviews with Ian Roxburgh and Andy Hall.
