Sony surprised everyone at CES 2022 by announcing the PSVR 2. While we got some details about the specs, there are still a few pieces of the puzzle missing.
One of the key missing pieces is the release date. Sony didn’t reveal whether the device will hit the market before the end of 2022. When asked for official word, Sony stated that there is no official announcement yet. Axios gaming reporter Stephen Totilo was informed by Sony that there are no further details to be shared at this time.
Totilo posted on Twitter (via PushSquare): “I asked Sony if PSVR2 would be out in 2022 and if it’ll be backwards compatible with PSVR titles (something many people asked me to ask them yesterday). Neither was addressed yesterday. Sony PR says they have nothing further to announce at the moment. So stay tuned…”
Although Sony’s silence doesn’t rule out a holiday season release, it just means that Sony isn’t saying either way right now. Reports prior to the event had suggested the headset is ready for production, which supports the rumors of a 2022 release.
Existing owners of the current headset are also wondering if their PlayStation VR games will be compatible with the new headset. Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t shared more information on that front either.
If the new headset isn’t compatible, there could be a silver lining if Sony decides to port games over. However, native support for games like Astro Bot Rescue Mission seems less likely.
Sony would likely aim to make some of the best PSVR games available across both generations, but without additional work, we shouldn’t expect much in terms of native backwards compatibility.
