If you were to imagine the perfect place for vacuum enthusiasts, it would probably look a lot like Mid Missouri Vacuum. A combination of a store, repair service, and vacuum museum, it boasts a collection of over 600 colorful vacuum cleaners spanning the last 150 years. The oldest, from 1879, is affectionately named Little Witch.
Mid Missouri Vacuum is also the location for the annual Vacuum Cleaner Collectors Group Convention, where dozens of vacuum enthusiasts gather each year to test, compete, and exchange ideas.
Tom Gasko, the museum’s owner, serves as an expert guide and father figure for a tight-knit group of younger collectors who travel from across the country to attend the convention. Gasko, a 61-year-old with various artistic interpretations of old vacuum logos tattooed on his arms and legs, is the heart of this unique community.
During September, we spent a fantastic weekend at the Rolla, Missouri conference, along with senior visual designer Dana Davis, who produced the visuals in this article.

Choosing the Right Vacuum Cleaner
A tiny apartment with wood floors and a couple of area rugs might be fine with a stick vacuum, such as the Ryobi 18V One+ HP Cordless Pet Stick Vac or the Dyson V12 Detect Slim. On the other hand, a larger house with wall-to-wall carpeting, pets, and children might require a high-end corded machine, such as a model by SEBO or a Miele, known for their repairable, durable vacuums.
Your physical strength, cleanliness standards, and ergonomic preferences also play a role in choosing the right vacuum for your needs. Gregory Palmer, the proprietor of Empire Vac in Syracuse, New York, is an expert who tailors recommendations based on various factors such as floor types, presence of kids or pets, and home size.
Understanding Maintenance and Repair

Improving the User Experience
Repairability and the availability of parts are crucial, with newer machines often lacking the long-term durability of older models. Despite this, high-end, bagged vacuums offer better filtration and improved home air quality. The upright SEBO Felix Premium and the SEBO Airbelt K3 Premium canister vac are recommended for their filtration and extended warranties, minimizing environmental impact from disposable machines.

It’s often worth investing in a quality vacuum as it provides a better user experience and is more environmentally friendly. Basic maintenance is essential for ensuring your vacuum lasts, and listening to its sounds can provide early indications of any issues.

Appreciating the Craft
Some enthusiasts are very attached to their vacuum cleaners, appreciating their lasting durability and the satisfaction they get from using them. Ultimately, a good vacuum can be a long-term investment that enhances the user experience.
