Google is expanding its investment in AI technology to develop new songs and lyrics in the music industry. It has released MusicFX, an upgraded version of MusicLM, last year’s music-generating tool, aimed at producing high-quality and faster music generation.
MusicFX is available in Google’s AI Test Kitchen, which allows users to experiment with AI-powered systems. Although it was initially only available to select users in December, it is now generally accessible to all users.

MusicFX functions similarly to its predecessor, MusicLM, allowing users to input a text prompt, such as “two nylon string guitars playing in flamenco style,” to describe the song they want to create. It generates two 30-second versions by default, with options to extend the tracks to 50 or 70 seconds or automatically loop them.
It now also offers suggestions for alternative descriptor words in prompts, creating a word cloud of additional recommendations for relevant descriptions, instruments, and tempos to add to the song.

However, despite the advanced features, the generated tracks are described as clean and crisp but tend to be uninspired and melodically unfocused, based on a brief testing.
Google has also released TextFX, a new lyrics generation tool in the AI Test Kitchen, designed to complement MusicFX. However, it is not an automated lyrics generator but is a suite of modules to aid in the lyrics-writing process, and may need further review of its outputs.
