Creating a unique vehicle name can be challenging. Many new EVs have opted for generic names like the Volvo EX30 or quirky ones like the Toyota bZ4X. However, Honda struck the right chord with its new Prologue. The name is not only memorable but also fitting.

Honda, a pioneer in hybrids, was slow to embrace EVs and focused on limited-range compliance cars like the Clarity sedan with plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell variants. The 2024 Prologue marks Honda’s entry into the long-range EV market aimed at mainstream buyers and sets the stage for more EVs to come.

The Prologue was born out of necessity due to stringent emissions regulations, leading Honda to partner with GM, its former rival. This collaboration resulted in the Prologue sharing the same Ultium platform and technologies as the Chevrolet Blazer EV.

In essence: Launching into a competitive and declining market segment is challenging, but the 2024 Honda Prologue is poised for mass-market success. It offers a compelling package while leaving room for improvement such as a frunk, more power, and a lower price point to enhance its appeal.

2024 Honda Prologue Overview

Twenty-five years after introducing the first hybrid-electric vehicle in the U.S., Honda finally steps into the long-range all-electric vehicle market with the Prologue. This new EV is the result of a unique partnership with GM and shares a platform with the Chevrolet Blazer while retaining Honda’s distinct identity.

Unique Offerings

Unlike identical models from other automakers, such as the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, the 2024 Honda Prelude showcases individuality beyond appearances. Though Honda and GM collaborated on fundamentals, they diverged on design, technologies, and drivetrain strategies.

While both the Blazer and Prologue target the same niche, they differ in execution, emphasizing their unique attributes.

Performance & Variants

The Prologue offers a focused selection with front-wheel-drive (FWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD). The Elite AWD variant, which I tested, features two motors delivering a combined 288 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque. While not class-leading, the Prologue provided adequate power for everyday driving.

Notably, Honda doesn’t currently offer a high-performance version like the Blazer’s SS pAWD with 557 hp and 648 lb-ft. However, there’s speculation of a performance-focused Prologue in the future.

Driving Experience

The Prologue’s driving experience is spirited, benefiting from the instant torque delivery typical of electric vehicles. The low center of gravity and balanced weight distribution contribute to agile handling, making it enjoyable to drive on winding roads.

One standout feature is the One-Pedal mode, simplifying driving by regenerating power when coasting or braking. This mode enhances control and efficiency, a welcome addition for EV drivers.

Design & Interior

Compared to its Chevy counterpart, the Prologue sports a more conservative exterior design, catering to Honda’s traditional style. The interior offers a spacious cabin thanks to the skateboard-like platform, providing ample room for occupants.

Inside, the Prologue boasts user-friendly controls, including hardware knobs for climate functions, a feature appreciated by many drivers. The infotainment setup with dual large screens and premium features enhances the overall driving experience.

Technology Integration

Honda leverages technology partnerships to enhance the Prologue’s features, incorporating Google’s infotainment OS and advanced safety systems. The inclusion of wireless smartphone integration and over-the-air updates adds convenience to the driving experience.

Charging Options

Honda offers various charging solutions for Prologue owners, catering to different needs and lifestyles. The 85 kWh battery pack supports quick charging, enabling rapid range replenishment at public stations.

Pricing & Availability

The Prologue is available for pre-order, with the base EX model starting at $48,795. Pricing for other variants, like the EX FWD and Elite AWD, ranges from $50,190 to $60,690, reflecting different configurations and features.

Closing Thoughts on the 2024 Honda Prologue

The Honda Prologue enters a competitive EV market as a robust contender despite arriving late. Its blend of practicality, performance, and Honda’s eco-friendly image positions it well for success. While challenges exist, Honda’s dedication to innovation and customer-centric design bode well for the Prologue’s future success.
