Google introduced Gemini and its tiers, among which is Nano, operating entirely on the device. Initially, Google planned to restrict Gemini Nano to the Pixel 8 Pro, although the standard Pixel 8 has the same chipset.
Following significant online criticism, Google has had a change of heart. Evidently, they can bring Gemini Nano to the Pixel 8, and it will be introduced as a developer preview in the upcoming June Pixel Feature Drop.
Google acknowledged the high level of “enthusiasm” for Gemini Nano among Pixel 8 users. The company once again pointed out the challenges of running extensive language models like this on phones with different memory capacities, emphasizing the rigorous testing done on the Pixel 8.
Gemini Nano will drive two new features: Summarize in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard. These features will be available on both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, operating offline thanks to the on-device Gemini Nano.
