Creating a More Sustainable Building
Google has a bold objective of operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. This means that our offices and data centers will run on clean energy around the clock. To accomplish this, one crucial step is to reduce the energy consumption of our offices. That’s why when we announced our intention to purchase the Thompson Center, we also committed to transforming it into a LEED Platinum, all-electric building.
This is a challenging task for a building like the Thompson Center. To achieve the efficiency improvements we’re aiming for, the building’s facade and internal systems need to be completely overhauled. The new triple-pane glass exterior will enhance the building’s thermal performance, require less energy for heating and cooling, and improve the overall comfort for the occupants. It will also give the building a modern look, maximize natural daylight, and provide stunning views. Moreover, outdated heating and cooling equipment will be replaced with high-efficiency systems capable of managing Chicago’s diverse weather conditions.
The addition of covered terraces along three levels of the southeast perimeter will introduce new green spaces. The incorporation of more natural light, access to green areas, and design elements inspired by nature will retain the original design’s emphasis on transparency and openness.
We are committed to guiding the Thompson Center into the 21st century while preserving its iconic architectural form. Such enhancements typically take several years to complete, and we are enthusiastic about what this project represents for the wider Chicago community. More details about our plans will be shared in the future.
