In my early years, oblivious to the outdoorsy spirit, I roamed through Aztec ruins in Mexico, crossed jungle rivers in India, and trekked Nepalese mountains in my reliable Chacos. I recently discovered that the iconic model was named the Z Sandal.
They have always been my “Chacos,” a name frequently shared by fellow travelers with a knowing nod. The question lingers, why is this enduring footwear so cherished? How did a sandal born from river runners become a favorite for all adventurers?
Having witnessed their popularity soar over the years, it all boils down to the sandals’ adaptability, comfort, and longevity. Despite being in existence longer than GearJunkie and being featured in various GearJunkie guides to the Finest Hiking Sandals, deal compilations, and write-ups, we had yet to delve into the original Chacos on their own. Given the brand’s upcoming 35th anniversary, it’s high time for a review, especially with my extensive testing and experience over half a lifetime.
In summary: The Chaco Z Sandal delivers exceptional traction, durability, and a versatile design. The sturdy rubber sole and durable nylon straps are replaceable and long-lasting. The design is straightforward, securing your feet with remarkable tenacity. Whether it’s the open-toe Z/1 or the toe-strap Z/2, this sandal will keep you going on almost any terrain. It is built to last for years, with the option for repairs from the company.

Chaco Z Sandal: A Detailed Review
The Chaco Z Sandal has undoubtedly become an iconic piece of gear. This river sandal was first introduced in 1989, merely three years after my birth in South Texas. As the brand commemorates its 35th anniversary this April, I reflect on its influence on my life. Having worn Chaco sandals since the age of 12 during my global travels with my family, across three continents, I bring decades of experience to this review.
My first pair came as my family relocated to India for my dad’s Fulbright teaching grant. Just before our departure on a Christmas morning in 2000, my savvy mom purchased a pair of Chacos for each of us.
For the subsequent 6 months, we practically lived in them across India’s varied terrain, from jungles to beaches, deserts, and mountains.
Their versatility stood out immediately. Wearable almost anywhere and at any time, providing a secure footing, especially true for the Z/1 sandal without the big toe strap.
