Black culture has a significant impact on various aspects of our lives, including the music we enjoy, the trends we follow, and the technology we use. The innovative ideas and creations of Black founders, creatives, and leaders are playing a vital role in advancing AI and enhancing product representation.
In recognition of this influence, Google’s Black Googler Network (BGN) has chosen “Afrofuturism” as the theme for the 2024 Black History Month. Afrofuturism, a movement that combines science fiction, history, and African diaspora culture, has extended beyond literature and film. As a global lead for BGN, I have had the privilege of meeting Googlers from diverse backgrounds who embody the spirit of Afrofuturism and are actively contributing to building a future that we can all take pride in.
During Google’s celebration of Black History Month in Canada, the US, and Germany, and its ongoing support for the Black community, there are three particular highlights that I am excited about:
Celebrating Black culture through our products
On February 1, the Google homepage pays tribute to the late James Baldwin, an American writer and civil rights activist, through an inspiring Google Doodle created by guest artist Jon Key. Google Play is showcasing inspiring and innovative Black creators in the Black History Month hub, which offers a curated selection of apps, games, and books. Furthermore, Google TV will feature a collection of movies and shows under the theme “Black Genius,” encompassing Afrofuturism, real-life stories of Black innovation and strength, the next generation of Black genius, and free Live TV focused on Black-centric content. Throughout the month, Google TV’s Featured Carousel will include content tagged as “Black Genius.”
Google Arts & Culture has introduced new stories and a new chapter that celebrates the performing arts in its Black History and Culture hub. The hub also highlights new partnerships with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Massachusetts Hip Hop Archive, as well as new collaborations with existing partners from various other museums and archives. Meanwhile, YouTube encourages users to explore its Spotlight Channel, where they can discover content from creators across Gaming, Fashion & Beauty, Lifestyle, and more.
A notable highlight for me this year is the collaboration of BGN members Asya Brown, Na’kia Channey, and Dieu Buhendwa with Google Meet, resulting in the creation of its latest virtual background that celebrates Black culture and art. This background showcases items of significant historical and cultural importance, serving as a reminder of the rich heritage of Black culture.
