Earlier this year, Readyverse Studios – a collaboration between blockchain tech company Futureverse and Ernest Cline, the genius behind the sci-fi series Ready Player One – announced “The Readyverse.” This interactive platform brings metaverse games and experiences to life. Readyverse Studios joined forces with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) to bring the popular franchise to the metaverse through web3. WBD previously distributed the 2018 film adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg.
Today, the studio unveiled its first upcoming project within The Readyverse.
‘Open’ is a third-person battle royale game where players engage in competitive, multi-round gameplay using shooting, tactical strategies, and driving mechanics in a game-show-inspired setting. Readyverse Studios founders introduced Open through a trailer showcased at the South By Southwest (SXSW) festival today.
The new game includes a Ready Player One environment where gamers can explore, acquire novel-inspired skins, and engage in competitive gameplay. Moreover, Open features other environments with familiar characters from renowned intellectual properties. The trailer depicts Wade Watts (also known as Parzival), the protagonist of Ready Player One, passing by nostalgic elements like a DeLorean car and classic television and gaming consoles.
For those unfamiliar with Cline’s creation, Ready Player One is set in 2045, portraying a world on the brink of collapse. The story centers on the OASIS, a virtual reality realm where most people seek solace. When the creator of OASIS dies, a contest ensues for users to discover a hidden Easter Egg, granting ownership of the virtual world. Watts, a young orphan and dedicated player, becomes a key player competing against corporate adversaries seeking to exploit OASIS for profit through intrusive ads.
Readyverse Studios describes Open as the “first top-tier metaverse experience integrating premium intellectual property while utilizing web3 technology.” The game is aligned with the core principles of The Readyverse, focusing on asset interoperability, digital ownership, decentralization, and security. Much of the technological foundation is provided by Futureverse, a network comprising 11 entities like gaming studios and blockchain startups.
Developed in collaboration with Walker Labs, Open is a PC game. Gaming enthusiasts can now register for early access by visiting the official website.
