Supporting Sustainable Travel
There is a growing interest in finding ways to minimize environmental impact while commuting, whether it’s going to work or running errands. To address this, we will introduce fuel-efficient routing on Google Maps for India and Indonesia, building on the existing availability in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Egypt. Additionally, we will also incorporate fuel-efficient routes for two-wheelers in these two new countries, expanding the reach of sustainable travel options.
Fuel-efficient routing utilizes AI to recommend routes with fewer inclines, reduced traffic, and steadier speeds while maintaining similar estimated arrival times. Since its launch in October 2021, it’s estimated to have helped prevent over 2.4 million metric tons of CO2e emissions — equivalent to removing approximately 500,000 fuel-based cars from the road for a year.
In addition, to assist users in finding other sustainable transportation options, such as trains, new train route suggestions will soon be available on Search when searching for flights. Furthermore, in the coming future, in France, when users seek driving directions, Maps will present public transit or walking suggestions alongside driving routes if the travel times are comparable and feasible.
