After numerous beta releases, Apple has officially rolled out the iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 updates to the public. These updates introduce significant changes to the iPhone and iPad, particularly for European users. The updates include the ability to install third-party apps and app stores, new emojis, messaging improvements, and more. Let’s explore the new features in iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4:

Support for Third-Party Apps and App Stores in the EU

With the Digital Markets Act (DMA) taking effect from March 6, 2024, Apple has integrated support for sideloading third-party apps and app stores in the EU. This change allows users to install alternative app platforms on their iPhones and iPads for the first time. By aligning with the DMA, Apple aims to create a fairer ecosystem for companies, developers, and apps in Europe.

Regarding the App Store, Apple has introduced a new system where developers are exempt from payment for the first million installs and only need to pay a standard fee of EUR 0.50 per user per year after that. Furthermore, the commission for apps distributed through the App Store has been reduced to 17 percent, or 10 percent for small business program participants. Apps distributed through alternative app stores will not incur any commission fees.

Apps installed from sources other than the Apple App Store will undergo a security verification process to ensure they are malware-free. Users can also set their preferred app store in the settings. However, this feature is currently available exclusively to EU users and is not expected to expand to other regions like Asia and North America.

Other EU-Specific Changes

In addition to supporting third-party app stores, Apple now allows developers to use alternative payment methods in their apps, offering greater flexibility in payment processing. Developers can integrate third-party payment systems directly into their apps or direct users to their payment websites. Apple mandates the use of reputable and secure platforms for third-party payments.

Apple has also introduced the option for users to select their default web browser on iOS 17.4 in the EU. When opening Safari, users will be prompted to choose from browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox as their preferred browser.

Furthermore, developers are no longer required to use Apple’s WebKit engine for browsers. This change enables companies like Google and Mozilla to employ their own browsing engines. NFC access is now open to developers in the EU, allowing third-party apps to offer contactless payment methods, reducing dependence on Apple Pay.

New Emojis

iOS 17.4 introduces a variety of new emojis, including a lemon slice, a brown mushroom, a broken chain, a shaking head emoji, and a dragon. Additionally, over 15 people and body emojis have adjustable facing directions.

Podcast Transcripts

The Apple Podcast app now provides transcripts on iOS 17.4, akin to the lyrics feature on the Music app. Transcripts are available in English, Spanish, French, and German, enabling users to search for specific words or phrases within them.

New iMessage Security Protocol and Features

Apple has enhanced the Messages app security with a new “state-of-the-art” protocol known as PQ3, safeguarding users against quantum computer phishing attacks. Messaging settings related to Siri now bear the label “Messaging with ‌Siri‌,” offering language-specific message reading options in languages such as Spanish, French, and German.

Battery Health Changes on iPhone 15

iOS 17.4 updates the battery health display on iPhone 15 models, showing a “Normal” label instead of the actual battery health percentage. The battery health section now includes additional statistics like battery cycle count, manufacture date, and first use information.

iOS 17.4 also introduces a new City Digital Clock widget and the stopwatch Live Activity feature, enhancing user experience.

Should You Upgrade to iOS 17.4?

If you are in the EU, iOS 17.4 is highly recommended due to the groundbreaking addition of third-party apps. Even though alternative app stores are yet to arrive, significant improvements have been made. For users outside the EU, while the update may not be as impactful, features like enhanced iMessage security, Apple Podcast transcripts, and new emojis make the update worthwhile. It is advisable to update your device promptly.
