Netflix Confirms No Dedicated App for Apple Vision Pro

Netflix has announced that it will not be launching a dedicated app for the Apple Vision Pro, nor will it be modifying its iPad version to be compatible with the headset. Instead, users will have to rely on the web version, which means they won’t be able to access features like downloading titles for offline viewing.

According to a Netflix spokesperson, “Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs.”

Bloomberg previously reported in July that Netflix had no plans for a native app, and this is now the official confirmation from the streaming giant.

Although the browser version should perform similarly to the iPad version, this news may disappoint subscribers who were anticipating an immersive experience while watching Netflix content. In contrast, Disney+ seems to be aiming to surpass its competitors with four backdrops inspired by Marvel’s Avengers Tower, the Scare Floor from Pixar’s “Monsters Inc.,” the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, and a Star Wars-themed environment featuring the cockpit of Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder and the planet Tatooine.

Comparing this decision to Netflix’s outdated Meta Quest app, it may suggest that the streaming service is not as committed to mixed reality headsets as other companies. Many Meta Quest users have complained about the app’s low resolution, bugs, and overall poor quality.

Since mixed reality headsets are still considered niche products, it’s likely that Netflix doesn’t anticipate the Vision Pro to be a major success with customers, especially given its high price point of $3,500 – at least not immediately.

The Apple Vision Pro, available for purchase on February 2, will enable users to download and stream movies and TV shows from popular services such as Disney+, Apple TV+, Max, Discovery+, Paramount+, Prime Video, Peacock, Pluto TV, and Tubi, among others. Additionally, there will be 150 3D movies available for rental and purchase, including “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “The Super Mario Bros,” “Dune,” and more. Preorders for the device open tomorrow, January 19, at 8 a.m. ET.
