Recently, Google has expanded its support for INSAIT, the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Technology based in Sofia, Bulgaria. With a new investment exceeding $2 million, Google is strengthening its dedication to promoting AI research and nurturing talent in Central and Eastern Europe.
This funding will grant INSAIT over $1 million in cloud computing resources, including access to Google Cloud’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). These advanced processors are tailored for machine learning tasks, empowering INSAIT researchers to create fundamental models and conduct groundbreaking AI studies.
The remaining $1 million will be allocated to supporting eight doctoral scholarships through the Google-INSAIT partnership. This program aims to attract and assist the most brilliant minds in the region, cultivating a new wave of AI professionals.
This investment expands on Google’s previous support for INSAIT, which commenced with a $3 million contribution in 2022 for computational resources and scholarships for gifted students. Google experts also provide mentorship to doctoral candidates at INSAIT.
Backing INSAIT’s objectives
Google believes that Central and Eastern Europe harbor significant untapped potential in the AI domain. Despite hosting abundant talent, the region is underrepresented in AI research. Through investments in institutions like INSAIT, Google aims to address this disparity.
Established in 2022, INSAIT has emerged as a prominent research hub in the area. Its goal is to establish a top-tier research environment that lures, nurtures, and retains exceptional talent, fostering a robust high-tech economy in Bulgaria. Professor Martin Vechev, the Founding Scientific Director of INSAIT, acknowledges that this fresh support validates the institute’s progress.
Collaboratively, we are shaping a promising future for AI — one that is more inclusive, inventive, and impactful for all.
