New Training in AI Skills and Research
An ongoing collaboration with academics and subject matter experts is aimed at helping journalists and publishers explore how AI technologies can enhance their work.
Two new lessons have been released – one for journalists and one for news business teams – designed to enhance AI literacy for those working at small- and medium-sized news publishers. The focus is on familiarizing users with new and existing Google-provided tools. For instance, these lessons can guide journalists on how to expedite investigative journalism processes using Pinpoint, and how to easily find fact checks on various topics using Fact Check Explorer.
Additionally, funding has been allocated for five new research projects, which aim to explore the ways generative AI technology can combat misinformation, strengthen quality information, and address harmful content. The funding will support independent research conducted by the University of Cambridge, the University of Westminster in collaboration with Facts Matter, Full Fact, Meedan, and WITNESS.
These efforts complement the ongoing partnership with “Journalism AI” at the London School of Economics, which, with support from the Google News Initiative since 2018, has developed training and research to assist journalists globally.
This announcement marks the beginning of a series of anticipated developments this year, with a commitment to further enhancing the tools and resources that support journalists worldwide.
