Sony’s Returnal game for PS5 is considered a next-gen title in almost every aspect. However, it was initially missing a standard feature – the ability to save games (or cycles in the game’s terminology) on the go.
Despite impressing audiences since its launch earlier this year, the inability to exit the game and power off the console without losing progress in a cycle was a source of frustration for many gamers. This was especially vexing given that the cycles can last for hours.
The solution is an update that brings the feature to ‘Suspend Cycle’, allowing players to pause the game and resume their progress the next time they play.
While it’s not a traditional save-game feature (such as during boss battles, cutscenes, or when in combat), it still prevents players from starting over whenever they are pulled away from their PS5.
The Suspend Cycle is a one-time use option, so the saved state is deleted as soon as progress is resumed. The changes in the Returnal 2.0 update are detailed in a post on the [PlayStation blog](https://blog.playstation.com/2021/10/26/returnal-2-0-update-brings-suspend-cycle-and-photo-mode/).
Harry Krueger, Game Director at Housemarque – recently acquired by Sony as a first-party studio – explains, “The structure of the game remains unchanged, so this functionality is not a traditional mid-game ‘Save Game’ option: by suspending the cycle, Returnal will simply create a single-use suspend point, and once you resume playing the suspend point is deleted and cannot be used again. Your game will continue directly from the moment you left it, and if you want to suspend the cycle again, your progress will be captured from that new point onwards.”
The update also introduces a Photo Mode that surpasses Sony’s SharePlay tools. Players can pause the game and use a camera to survey the scene and take a photo, with the ability to adjust focal distance, aperture, saturation or contrast.
