Rooms, the interactive 3D space designer known as Rooms, has now launched on the App Store. This startup, backed by $10 million in seed funding from a16z, allows users to design 3D spaces (“rooms”) and fill them with furniture, décor, pets, and avatars, turning them into mini-games if desired.
Rooms is primarily aimed at creating and exploring designs, offering a relaxing experience. However, it’s also educational, integrating coding concepts through Lua, a coding language used in platforms like Roblox, to introduce younger users to coding in a fun way. Several schools have adopted Rooms as a means of teaching coding to kids.
Moreover, the app’s open-ended play serves as a form of self-expression, with some users simply enjoying decorating their 3D spaces for fun. It has also made a mark with the trend of “cozy games,” where people engage in relaxing, goal-less activities.
The app features a TikTok-style feed where users can explore community-created rooms, with options to like, share, and even incorporate room snapshots into their own designs as décor. Rooms offers a wide range of items to choose from, with over 6,000 items in its catalog for users to design their spaces. Additionally, users can customize objects in various ways, such as changing size, shape, color, and more, as well as add media or use an OpenAI-powered tool to generate images.
The iOS app, compatible with both iPhone and iPad, provides an efficient browsing experience, with the iPad recommended for creation due to its larger screen size.
Since its beta launch, Rooms has garnered over 40,000 users who have created more than 50,000 rooms, with daily active users numbering in the thousands. Looking ahead, the company may explore incorporating AI to aid in room design, following cautious feedback from the community.
For now, the app is considered a beta release, with plans to continuously improve the user experience based on feedback. The iOS app for Rooms is now available on the App Store.
