Owners of selected Samsung Smart TVs have reason to be excited as Samsung is developing a new gaming platform.
Back in 2012, Samsung collaborated with Gaikai, the service that powers PlayStation Now and is now owned by Sony, to create a cloud gaming platform. Now, almost a decade later, Samsung is once again venturing into the realm of cloud gaming, this time with a new platform for its range of smart TVs.
The platform will be available on Samsung Smart TVs powered by Tizen, a Linux-based operating system that supports over 200 million Samsung devices. If you own a smart TV from the company, chances are you will qualify for this new gaming service.
This new development was announced during the Samsung SDC21 keynote presentation, although it was only briefly mentioned, and details about the service are still limited.
The idea is that users will be able to play games on their TV without needing to invest in high-end hardware, likely referring to video game consoles in general.
Samsung also mentioned that developers will be able to easily integrate the Samsung Smart TV experience into new games, though the specific details remain unclear.
While the announcement did not include any examples of game developers that Samsung is working with, it is likely that the hardware in question places the company in a similar space to Google Stadia’s style of gaming.
As the world of cloud gaming continues to grow in popularity and competitiveness, Samsung will need to be prepared for this endeavor. Many companies are now offering various forms of streamed gaming, with Xbox making moves to integrate gaming into TVs and streaming sticks and GeForce Now providing a subscription that offers the power of an RTX 3080.
As more information becomes available, we will keep you updated on Samsung’s latest gaming venture.
