I was delighted — even thrilled — to test Shure’s latest USB microphone. Since its launch at the end of 2020, the MV7 has been my go-to microphone for podcasting, with over 100 episodes recorded on it for my show, as well as for meetings, social gatherings, and telehealth visits.
If you’re in the market for a desktop microphone for podcasting or streaming and are willing to invest a little extra without dealing with a separate audio interface (though it does feature XLR functionality if you prefer), the MV7 has been a top choice. However, Shure’s MV7+ now raises the bar even further.
Staying true to its name, the MV7+ doesn’t deviate significantly from its predecessor. If you had asked me for a USB mic recommendation over the past year and a half, I would likely have suggested the original MV7. For current MV7 users, the upgrades in the MV7+ may not warrant an immediate switch, as it primarily focuses on refining an already outstanding microphone.
Shure surprised me by offering the new MV7+ for review, acknowledging the need for improvements over the original model. One prominent issue with the MV7 was the absence of USB-C connectivity, a concern I raised with the company upon learning about the MV7+. This new model addresses that issue, ensuring a more reliable and durable connection compared to the previous micro-USB interface.
During my usage of the MV7+, I have not encountered any connectivity issues thus far, thanks in part to the sturdier USB-C cable. Moreover, the MV7+ not only supports USB connection but also provides the option for XLR cables for those seeking additional functionality.
The MV7+ excels in sound quality, as demonstrated during recent recordings. Its performance was put to the test when hosting producer Don Was on the show, receiving praise for its audio quality even compared to Shure’s SM7B, known as a podcasting industry standard.
While the USB-connected MV7+ may not match the SM7B’s premium audio quality via XLR connection, it still delivers impressive performance and ease of use for USB microphone users. The MV7+ is designed to stand out among other USB microphones, offering high-quality sound output and adjustable EQ settings for optimal performance.
Shure’s MV7+ presents a comprehensive solution for amateur podcasters and streamers, featuring simple plug-and-play functionality with advanced sound control options accessible through the Shure Motiv Mix software. With new features like a “pop stopper” and customizable LED lighting, the MV7+ offers a premium podcasting experience out of the box.
The MV7+ is now available in black for $280, providing enhanced performance and functionality for users seeking top-tier sound quality and usability.
