For more than ten years, we’ve been assisting individuals worldwide with making simple and secure digital payments through Google Pay. This includes making purchases online or in physical stores. Currently, millions of people in over 180 countries utilize Google Pay to complete secure transactions when shopping with their preferred retailers. This can be done on desktop using ChromeOS, macOS, and Windows PC, on Android and iOS apps, and in stores. Android users have the convenience of saving, finding, and using their Google Pay payment methods while on the go through Google Wallet.
In the U.S., Google Wallet remains the main platform for securely storing payment cards used for tap-and-pay transactions in stores. It also supports other digital items such as transit cards, driver’s licenses, state IDs, and more. To simplify the app experience, the standalone Google Pay app in the U.S. will be discontinued from June 4, 2024. However, users can still access the most popular features, such as tapping to pay in stores and managing payment methods, directly from Google Wallet, which is utilized five times more than the Google Pay app in the U.S.
Key points about this change
Our aim is to make this transition as seamless as possible for our users. All the usual functions of Google Pay — from online checkouts to tap-and-pay in stores — will remain unchanged. Furthermore, for the large number of users in India and Singapore, no changes will occur as we continue to cater to the unique requirements of these countries.
Below are some important updates for users of the U.S. Google Pay app:
- Manage your Google Pay balance from the Google Pay app until June 4: You can continue to view and transfer your Google Pay balance to your bank account using the U.S. version of the Google Pay app until June 4, 2024. After this date, you will still be able to transfer your funds to your bank account through the Google Pay website. Learn more about transferring money out of Google Pay.
- Find offers and deals on Google: To assist users in finding the best deals while shopping, we recently introduced a new deals destination on Search.
- Changes to peer-to-peer payments: As of June 4, 2024, peer-to-peer money transfers will no longer be available through the U.S. version of the Google Pay app.
We have dedicated efforts to enhancing payment speed and smoothness, such as improving Google Pay autofill in Chrome, simplifying public transit payments, and broadening the range of passes that can be stored in Wallet. Looking ahead, we are committed to further enriching payment experiences.
