Sony’s Next-Gen PlayStation VR 2 Could Be a Game Changer for VR
If you’re eager for an upgrade to your PSVR experience in 2022, this rumor could brighten your new year.
A source in the Chinese supply chain has suggested that the next-generation PlayStation VR headset is set to begin mass production soon, potentially bringing a new wave of top PSVR games to enjoy.
This news is a welcome development for a device that hasn’t had much attention recently, following Sony’s initial announcement about the upcoming advanced controllers for the PSVR 2.
According to the rumor, the Chinese manufacturer Gortek has secured the contract to manufacture the headset. This is the same company that built the first-generation model and supplied components for the PS5, so it’s logical that they would be retained for the new version. Gortek also collaborates with Meta on the Quest 2 headset.
According to PushSquare, the initial report from the Chinese source states that Gortek has started “receiving orders from major Japanese customers, receiving positive feedback, which lays a solid foundation for next year’s collaboration to supply a new generation of VR and further increase the supply share of game consoles.”
It is also mentioned, “Major Japanese customers will launch a new generation of VR in 2022. With its game consoles, it is expected to ship about 1 million – 2 million units.”
Although these comments are translated by a machine and should be viewed with caution, the intent is clear, although their credibility remains in question.
If production goes smoothly, Sony could potentially release the PSVR 2 for PS5 owners this autumn, six years after the original model made a significant impact on console gaming.
The original PSVR was a commercial success, with over five million units sold to PS4 owners since its launch in October 2016. However, given the advancements made by competitors like Oculus (now known as Meta), it’s time for Sony to take a leap forward and reaffirm its position as a leader in the VR industry. Could an official announcement be on the horizon?
