As I dashed along the rugged desert trail in my stylish tank top running vest, a thought crossed my mind – did I look out of place? Despite feeling like my usual trail-running self, the Ultimate Direction Xodus ($180) stood out from the typical trail-running attire. And there’s a good reason for that.
The Ultimate Direction Xodus Vest differs from conventional vests as it fits more like a long sports bra or a cropped tank top. It extends just above the belly button, boasting material that wraps around the upper torso for a snug and comfortable fit with additional pockets.
Having tested an early model of the Ultimate Direction Xodus Vest on numerous 10-20+ mile runs throughout winter and spring, I must say it’s remarkable. While I won’t discard my other running vests, this one has been my primary choice for months now.
In summary: The Ultimate Direction Xodus revolutionizes the running vest, enhancing fit, comfort, and storage accessibility compared to traditional vests. With 12 functional pockets, you can pack this vest with all your trail necessities and more without any bouncing, even when fully loaded. The well-fitted design prevents chafing, though the extra material may feel slightly warmer than open-chested vests. Surprisingly, this is the only running vest I’ve comfortably worn shirtless. Overall, I’m thoroughly impressed with this innovative piece of gear.

Ultimate Direction Xodus Review
A Plethora of Pockets

The Xodus boasts nine front pockets (plus two hydration slots) where I’ve managed to pack a wide array of items during my longer trail runs.
On my extended runs, I usually carry my large smartphone in the central zipper pocket alongside two 500 mL soft flasks, a GoPro camera, a Joby GorrillaPod mini tripod, gummy candies, a couple of energy bars, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (cut into quarters), electrolyte packs, lip balm, sunscreen, and my keys, all fitting comfortably in the Xodus front pockets.
Note: There are some slight variations in pocket layout between the early sample I tested and the production version. My sample featured 11 front pockets, with only two zippered ones, and three pockets that were slightly less usable due to being beneath others. The production model addresses this by eliminating redundant pockets and adding a third zippered pocket, which I find to be an improvement.
Accessible Back Pocket

The Xodus features a spacious back pocket with entry points on both sides, allowing easy access even while on the move if your shoulder mobility permits. This pocket is ideal for storing a jacket and additional layers within quick reach.
Unlike most running vests with back pockets that require stopping or slowing down to access, the Xodus lets you grab your jacket on the fly, keeping you going on that windy ridge without missing a beat.
Stable, No-Bounce Fit

The Xodus vest wraps securely around your torso, staying stable even when fully packed. With every pocket made of stretch mesh, your items remain close to your body without bouncing. The vest can be adjusted under both arms using shock cord lacing, allowing you to tighten it as needed.
Even when cinched tightly, the stretchy materials maintain a comfortable yet secure feel without restricting your movement. It stays in place naturally while in motion, providing a smooth and bounce-free run.
Close to Perfect, But Not Quite
Before you bid adieu to your old running vest and grab this one, there are a few downsides to consider with the Xodus.
Donning and doffing the Xodus is not as straightforward as other vest designs that resemble backpacks. You have to pull it over your head like a tank top, then zip both the front and back parts under your arm. Initially, it may require assistance, although it becomes easier with practice. Nevertheless, it’s not as effortless as throwing on a backpack and clipping the sternum straps.
Due to its slightly cumbersome nature, the Xodus may not be as convenient in cold weather when layer adjustments are frequent. While you can layer a shell over it, adding a layer underneath requires more effort compared to traditional running vests.
The additional chest fabric can also contribute to a warmer feel compared to open-chested vests. Despite being made of breathable mesh, prolonged use in hot conditions may lead to sweat accumulation, visible as salt stains on the chest over time.
To combat the heat from the excess fabric, a simple solution is to wear the Xodus without a shirt when temperatures rise, given its shirt-like design that doesn’t cause irritation on bare skin.
