As we celebrate the Year in Search by taking a look back at some of the most sought-after trends of all time, it’s also a time to reflect on the topics, individuals, and inquiries that intrigued us collectively in 2023.
This year, movie and TV shows held our attention, with “Barbie” and “The Last of Us” emerging as the top trending movie and TV show globally. These subjects even sparked other popular trends: “Barbie nails” and “Barbie outfits” were the top trending searches in their respective categories in the U.S. Additionally, fashion trends were a major hit this year, with “it’s giving fashion” emerging as the top trending phrase.
We also witnessed advancements in search methods, such as using Lens to take a photo or humming a song into Search. The caterpillar claimed the top spot as the most searched insect through Lens this year, and Imagine Dragons’ “Bones” became the most searched song through Hum to Search. Our curiosity extended to outdoor spaces as well, with Barcelona’s Park Güell and Paris’ Louvre Museum ranking as the most searched park and museum globally on Google Maps.
Curious about the top trends in your local area? This year, we are reintroducing our local hub, offering insights into the intriguing trends that emerged across the U.S. We are exploring the top trending TV shows, concerts, sports matchups, and “near me” searches from every metro area. Here’s an interesting tidbit: Quincy, Illinois was the sole location in the U.S. where “day trips near me” was a top trending “near me” search.
In honor of Google’s 25th birthday this year, we are expanding our yearly tradition from a Year in Search to 25 Years in Search. You can view the 2023 annual lists here and also delve into 25 Years of Search film and our Time Capsule here.
