# The North Face Recon Backpack: A Multifunctional Everyday Carry Pack
As a freelance outdoor photographer, writer, and athlete, finding the perfect backpack to satisfy all my needs has been a challenge. I’ve owned numerous packs, but none of them quite fit the bill. When I had the chance to test The North Face’s Recon 30L Backpack, I was intrigued by its promise to be an everyday carry backpack with a range of features.
For an entire week, I put this pack to the test in various scenarios, from adventures to errands, to see if it could potentially replace multiple backpacks. Despite not being designed for cameras, I was pleasantly surprised by its ability to accommodate my gear, including my 17-inch laptop, reducing the need for multiple bags.
In short, the North Face Recon 30L Backpack, priced at $109, proved to be a valuable multipurpose pack. Its extra padding, numerous pockets, and 30L capacity exceeded my expectations.

### Can One Pack Do It All?
The Recon impressed me with its smart compartment layout, specifically its ability to accommodate my 17-inch laptop. As someone who usually carries a laptop bag, a camera bag, and an outdoor bag, consolidating everything into one pack was a significant advantage. Despite not being designed for cameras, the Recon’s padding provided sufficient protection for my camera gear.
### Pockets and Storage
Unlike many single-compartment bags, the Recon’s compartment layout allowed for organized storage, keeping my gear and accessories well-arranged. The numerous pockets and sleeves made it easy to keep everything in place, and the lining of the pockets ensured my belongings stayed dry.
### Carrying Comfort
The FlexVent suspension system and articulated shoulder straps contributed to the pack’s exceptional carrying comfort. Though the included hipbelt was minimal, it provided additional stability when the pack was fully loaded.
### Room for Improvement
While the pack excelled in many aspects, some minor improvements could enhance its functionality. I found the shorter zippers made accessing items at the bottom of the main compartments challenging, and the stiff side pockets, while secure, lacked the flexibility of stretch-mesh pockets.
### Conclusions
After thorough testing, I can confidently say that the North Face Recon 30L Backpack has the potential to replace other packs. While it may not be ideal for carrying camera gear exclusively, it excels as a reliable day-to-day pack with ample space, comfort, and thoughtful features.
For those looking for alternative options, the Osprey Nebula 32L ($140) and the Patagonia Black Hole backpack are worth considering. However, if you prioritize substantial padding and protection for your possessions without breaking the bank, the North Face Recon is a solid choice.
Overall, the North Face Recon 30L Backpack stands out for its versatility, comfort, and functionality, making it a worthy investment for individuals seeking a reliable everyday carry pack.
