Sony’s PS5 has dethroned the Nintendo Switch as the best-selling console in the US, ending the Switch’s 33-month streak at the top
Despite challenges such as stock issues and chip shortages, the PlayStation 5 managed to outsell the Nintendo Switch in terms of money made and unit volume in September, marking a significant victory for Sony. NPD analyst Mat Piscatella highlighted these stats on Twitter.
The reason behind the PS5’s surge in sales is unclear, but the high demand for the console since its launch in November 2020 has been hampered by production slowdowns caused by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the release of the highly acclaimed game Deathloop as a timed console exclusive for the PS5 in September likely contributed to the increased sales.
Conversely, Nintendo experienced a sales boom during the early days of the pandemic, driven by the popularity of Animal Crossing: New Horizons as people turned to gaming during lockdowns.
It remains to be seen if the PS5 will maintain its position as the top-selling console, especially considering the ongoing chip shortage. The availability of the Nintendo Switch OLED could also impact the future sales performance of both consoles.
In terms of the most popular games, Madden NFL 22 claimed the top spot in the US, followed by FIFA 22 and NBA 2K22. Additionally, Diablo 2 and Deathloop secured prominent positions in the game sales charts for September.
