Valve has revealed the prototype and packaging for the upcoming Steam Deck, offering a glimpse of what to expect upon its release in 2022.
With the initial release date postponed to 2022, those eagerly anticipating the Steam Deck will have to wait a bit longer to get their hands on it. Nevertheless, Valve has provided a preview of the final packaging and a look at the Steam Deck DV prototype in a recent blog post.
The exterior of the box appears rather plain, with some quirky images on the side, including the iconic Portal Companion Cube. The post also advises against using the box as an umbrella, a magnet, or hurling it to the ground.
Inside the packaging, there are instructions in various languages detailing where you can use your Steam Deck, with a ‘test chamber’ option offering another nod to the Portal game. The actual Steam Deck is housed underneath the packaging, and Valve noted that only the 64GB and 256GB models will come with this case. The 512GB variant will include an anti-glare etched glass screen and a special case, details of which have not been revealed yet.
This packaging applies to the first two variants, while the model inside is the Steam Deck DV prototype, providing a better idea of the final product. Additionally, it has been confirmed that there will be no Steam Deck exclusive games, and Valve is addressing the reported issues with the sticky B button. The Steam Deck development kits are expected to be distributed soon, and we will share our experience with this portable PC once we have the opportunity to try it out.
