In an interview with IGN, Xbox chief Phil Spencer expressed his belief that a rumored PlayStation equivalent to the Game Pass subscription platform is “the right answer” for Sony.
Spencer called the anticipated rival, believed to combine the existing PS Plus and PlayStation Now services, “an inevitability.”
Additionally, Spencer stated that Sony’s decision to bring certain franchises to PC “makes sense” overall, seeming unthreatened by the potential arrival of a PlayStation feature that could level the playing field. He emphasized the importance of allowing customers to play the games they want, where they want, and offering transparency about the company’s plans regarding PC and cross-gen initiatives.
When commenting on the potential introduction of a Game Pass rival, Spencer maintained that he would not view it as validation for Microsoft, stating, “I actually, when I’m talking to our teams, I talk about it as an inevitability.”
He stressed the need for ongoing innovation and competition, indicating that while Microsoft’s current initiatives might provide advantages in the market, they are not necessarily exclusive and driving their energy towards creating and delivering great games across various platforms and making them accessible through a subscription model from day one.
